Suffolk Fire's quick response Friday may have saved a big chunck of an I-664 overpass Friday. A dump truck blew a tire and burst into flames after falling from the interstate to the road below. Suffolk Fire Chief Michael Barakey tells News-10.....Preview: The Fire Chief says the wreck caused a fuel spill that fed flames shooting up around the overpass support girders. Girder damage could have shut down part of I-664 but firefighters likely got it out in time. The truck driver is OK and no other injures.
The state is adding more counties to its ongoing drought watch. The Department of Environmental Quality announced Friday that the drought watch advisory has been expanded to cover 44 counties. National Interagency Fire Center meteorologist Jim Wallman discusses areas of the country where above normal wildfire activity could take place this month due to dry conditions.Preview: Thirty-four counties in northern and eastern Virginia were already seeing early signs of drought, and the latest update adds ten counties in the Roanoke River Basin. The DEQ says the upcoming forecast indicates below-normal rainfall and higher-than-average temperatures around the state over the next two weeks.
An Olympian from Henrico County wants to help the next generation of athletes. Hermitage High School alum Queen Harrison Claye competed in track and field in the 2008 Olympics. She returned to her alma mater yesterday for the Queen Track Classic. Claye tells CBS 6 the biggest contribution she can make isn't medals but how she can let younger runners know they can be great and greater than she was.
