An island in the Chesapeake Bay is getting a grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to improve petroleum storage. The two-point-three-million-dollar grant will help purchase Tangier Island's current storage facility so new double-walled tanks can be installed. Some of the money will also be used to buy new equipment for the island's wastewater treatment plant and install floodgates in some areas. The VDEQ says the projects will help support the island's fishing fleet while protecting vulnerable areas from environmental damage.

Students from Charlottesville, Norfolk and Merrifield advanced to the semi-final round of the competition yesterday in National Harbor, Maryland. Rohith Konduir of Norfolk made it the farthest, being eliminated in the eighth round when he misspelled the word "becard" [[ BEK-ard ]]. The eight spellers left in the competition will face off tonight in the finals.
