There's a dental hygienist shortage in the US, and a Chesterfield County dentist says this has been years in the making. Virginia Family Dentistry Dr. Pete Appleby talked recently about a study released last month by the Virginia Dental Association. It found the number of dentists is larger than the number of hygienists which Appleby says it's supposed to be the opposite. Demand for dental appointments is rising, leading to long wait times for appointments. Appleby tells CBS 6 efforts are underway across the industry to recruit more hygienists, but it's going to take time.
The number of women dying while pregnant is dropping in the U.S. A report from the CDC shows 817 women died while pregnant or soon after giving birth in 2022. That's down from the 12-hundred and five deaths the previous year which was during the coronavirus pandemic.
Book lovers are being invited to a Fairfax County library for a special sale this weekend. Supporters of the Reston County Regional Library have collected around a thousand boxes of used books that will be on sale through Sunday. Organizers say it's the most books ever collected for one of their sales. Money raised through the sale will be used to support library programming throughout the year.
