Holiday travelers will encounter fewer restrictions on Virginia highways over the Memorial Day weekend. The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to suspend many highway work zones around the state beginning at noon today. Most lane closures on interstates and other roads will also be lifted through noon on Tuesday. Drivers are urged to check the V-DOT website for travel advisories before leaving home this weekend.
Firefighters in Newport News say a dog and a cat are just fine after they both wound up in a tree earlier this week. Animal welfare officials say a bluetick hound named Tator chased a cat up a tree on Wednesday and wound up getting stuck on a branch about 20 feet off the ground. Firefighters pulled Tator down using a ladder while the cat watched from above. Newport News Animal Welfare said in a social media post that the cat got out of the tree without help. The agency said the fire department learned that dogs can climb trees, while Tator learned that they can't climb down.
